| The History Of Our School:
Chicken
Creek School was established as a subscription school in 1861.
Rachel Sweet was hired to teach school in the log cabin kitchen of Mrs.
Susan Dunmire. Rachel was to receive $7.00 a month and board for
the three month term. However, when the term was over, the
patrons did not have the money to pay all of her salary. To make
up the difference, Rachel received part of her pay in wool stocking
yarn.
When the log cabin school became a part of the public education system, it was replaced by a frame building (see photos above). The original frame building burned in the early 1900's and was replaced with a second frame building. Modern School continued to serve the educational needs of the children of School District No. 9 until the late 1940's.
