Leah Davis Killed in Runaway.
A sad accident occurred last Saturday
evening at seven o’clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Davis, two and
one half miles west of Allen when their two year old daughter was killed by
a runaway team. Mr. Davis had come in from his work in the field and
left his team while he drove some cattle out of a lot near the barn.
A dog ran barking after the cattle and frightened the horses and they turned
and ran back along the lane toward the house. The little girl was toddling
down the land to her father and the frightened team ran directly over her.
Two of the wheels of the heavy wagon passing over her neck and causing instant
death. The mother of the little girl was close by and saw the accident
but was unable to save her on account of a fence that was between them.
Medical aid was called immediately but it was of no avail; the spirit of
the little one had fled.
Leah Ellen Davis was born near Allen, Lyon County, Kansas, February
2, 1912, departed this life May 23, 1914 at the age of two years, three months
and twenty-two days. She was a dear loving little child, and idolized
by her parents and brothers. She leaves to mourn her departure a father,
mother, four brothers and a number of other relatives. The hearts of
all go out in sympathy to the grief stricken parents in their sad bereavement.
God has taken little Leah to be with him. We are sure that she in her
purity and innocence is safe in the arms of the loving Savior.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Protestant church at
Allen at three o’clock Sunday afternoon attended by a large crowd of sympathizing
friends. The church was decorated with beautiful flowers and the casket
was covered with roses. Pall bearers were Ethel Dwyre, Juanita Grimsley,
Hazel Edmunds and Eva Leavell. The services were conducted by Rev. Luther
K. Layne, after which the body was laid to rest in Allen cemetery.
